From the time she was very young, Barbara McCauley spent hours drawing, and began painting, in oils, in her teens. Always fascinated by people, she painted the figure and faces from her imagination. Later she took classes in art at UCLA extension where she did still life and landscape.
Her passion for art had to be put aside, however, when she married and had a child. Instead, she turned her creative needs to language and wrote poetry, fiction and non-fiction for the next twenty five years, returning to visual art only in the early 1990's.
When she was able to return to drawing and painting, she turned to the figure, joining a small group of other artists who hired a model once a week. Drawing turned to painting and, in 2001, she did a series of 24 paintings entitled "Woman Alone".
The human figure paintings began as much art begins: with about 5 paintings that just didn't satisfy the artist. She had painted the figures as nudes, but these figures were intensely absorbed in something in a way that didn't make sense if they were nude. So she destroyed all five, painting over them and starting anew.
The series had a one woman show at the Cardona-Hine Art Gallery and was very successful. Four paintings of figure from that series are now available.
