"Mother and Child"

In "Mother & Child" both the figures of the woman and the babe before her seem to evaporate into the background or perhaps coalesce out of that background. The artist herself feels that what arrived for her in this artwork is the emotional intensity of motherhood, the way a young mother "disappears" into her child's well-being and care. McCauley did not paint this as a self-portrait, and was initially surprised at how much the figure resembles herself in her early years as a mother. 28 x 22 acrylic on canvas.
