Cardona-Hine's The Vimalakirti Sutra Museum Buddhist Painting
A sutra is a teaching of the Buddha, the awakened Siddhartha. In the sutra which inspired this painting, Vimalakirti is the name of a great lay teacher whom the Buddha wishes his closest disciples to visit in order for them to test themselves against a great mind. The students are reluctant, having been bested by Vimalakirti on other occasions. The artist captures both the teacher's serene self-assurance and the students' reluctant visit. |
