Persimmons entered the artist's life when he first came to the U.S. from Costa Rica at the age of 13. He wrote extensively about them in his autobiography Thirteen Tangos for Stravinsky. When one of his closest friends came for Thanksgiving in Minnesota and brought some Japanese persimmons, flatter and more solid than their American cousins, with soft sage green leaves attached, the persimmons disappeared into the studio, only to return after he had put them into a few small paintings.Only then could anyone eat them. Now, with Japanese persimmons available at the markets in the Southwest, they still get a couple of days reprieve from being devoured until the artist is done painting them. |
