"Woman Alone #23"

The figure in "Woman Alone #23" is painted in a special paint called interference blue. Put over the reds beneath, it creates a shimmering effect. This figure is more abstract, more expressionistic, capturing a certain dancer's balance and readiness.

McCauley studied ballet as a young woman and used her knowledge of her own body--i.e. the feel of the stance or motion within her own body that she wanted to depict in her figure--to paint all of the paintings in this series.
